PROLOGUE
The hunt began the moment Taffy Marie Dosé’s plane touched down at the international airport on the main island of Mahé in the Seychelles.
Actually, it had started even before that but had proven disappointingly fruitless on the flight from Paris. Every man in the first-class section was either married, or not remotely attractive, even after a third glass of champagne. So, Taffy had spent most of the flight with a mask over her eyes, resting up for what she hoped to be a whirlwind of a romantic weekend once she got all this dull investing business out of the way.
If, that is, the right companion showed his face. Available, interesting, somewhat handsome, and, of course, above all else . . . rich.
“Ma’am,” the flight attendant said to her as the plane taxied to the gate. “Is there anything else I can get you?”
A man, she thought but smiled and said, “Nothing, thank you.”
She grabbed her tote bag, floppy hat, and wrap and was the first to stride out into paradise, her designer sandals slapping the shiny tile floor in a brisk rhythm as she moved, a sway to her hips. All the while, she kept her eyes trained upon the other travelers in the terminal, the gleam in them that of a cat, stalking its prey.
One never knows when he might appear.
That was what she’d learned, way back, with her second husband, Lyle, some twenty years ago. She’d literally tripped right over him while he stopped in her path to tie his shoe. He’d apologized profusely, which turned to coffee, and then dinner. He was an investment banker and had just lost his first wife, god rest her soul. What had followed afterwards was a romance for the ages.
Unfortunately, Lyle had been quite a bit older than her and had passed away in his sleep only six months after their marriage.
Now, after mourning poor Phillipe for a good, solid month, she was seeking number five. The Investors International Conference, or IIC, Broadbent Financial’s most exclusive investor’s conference, seemed like the place to do it, and it just so happened that their third home was a vacation villa nearby. Though it was Phillipe who’d handled the money when he was alive, since she thought it boring and crass, in her younger days, she’d been quite a savvy investment manager with many top clients. So, she’d play the game but only part of the time.
Here, in the playground of the rich and famous, where you couldn’t take a step in any direction without happening upon a successful man, was as good a place as any to find her next husband. During their many trips to the islands during their marriage, she’d always noticed young, wealthy, handsome men near their country club.
Though she was pushing fifty now, she was still as adept at attracting them as ever. Wealthy men liked well-kept, older women just as much as they liked the young bimbos. They liked a woman they didn’t have to explain everything to. Fluffing her long, blonde hair, she licked her lips as she located her driver.
“Allo, Loren,” she said to the young chauffer in the black suit, using the little French Creole she knew. “Kommansava? I’ve had an absolutely exhausting flight so please take me to the flat right away. I do hope I can take a little nap before the conference’s activities begin?”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said, gathering her bags. “However, there is a passenger who requires a ride out to Vista do Mar, as well, for the conference. I told him we could help.”
She sighed. “Oh, really Loren, why? I told you that I’m exhausted, and I need to rest as soon as possible. I want to go straight to my flat to freshen up.”
“I’m sorry, ma’am. It won’t be more than a moment. It’s on the way, and he’s already waiting in the car.”
She smiled at him and patted his hand. “You are far too kind of a man. A real gem. That’s why I adore you.”
Taffy accompanied him outside, breathing in the delightful ocean scent, feeling the cool breeze brace her skin. She smiled and donned her giant sunglasses. “Ah. It is good to be here again, finally. It feels like coming home.”
